    • Costa Rican cuisine is simple and, contrary to popular beliefs, is not spicy at all. Comida tipica (native dishes) rely heavily on rice and beans, the basis of many Costa Rican meals. Gallo pinto, the national dish of fried rice and black beans, is as prevelent and popular as is the hamburger in North America, particularly as a breakfast staple. Many meals are derivatives of the basic gallo pinto.
