Liberia, Guanacaste, is an ideal location to begin your Costa Rica vacation. Locally, Liberia is often referred to as "la ciudad blanca" (the white city). An appropriate name due to its whitewashed, colonial houses, built with a type of clay found all around the city with a particularly white color. Liberia, a small, quiet city of around 35,000 where a colonial atmosphere still exists, caters to tourists who wish to enjoy the wonderful weather and great beaches of the North Pacific Coast. Liberia is less than an hour from Tamarindo and Papagayo and only 3 hours to Arenal Volcano and about 3.5 hours to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. However, the city itself is quite enjoyable and safe. With lots of fresh seafood from the nearby coastline, it is a charming place to enjoy a sunset walk around the central park or just take in the sights of a mid-sized Costa Rican city. Local fiestas, the big one being July 25, "El Día de la Anexion", celebrating Guanacaste's Province annexation to Costa Rica, give color to Liberia with parades, horseshows, cattle auctions, rodeos, fiestas and roving marimba bands..
The bustling colonial city of Liberia is the provincial capital of the Guanacaste Region. The city center features a modern church, as many Costa Rican towns do, facing a plaza surrounded by locally-owned shops and restaurants. Liberia, being one of the older cities in Costa Rica and a long time trading hub, remains the economic center of the Guanacaste Province. Guanacaste is home to the largest cattle farms in Costa Rica and Liberia has remained the cultural capital of northern Costa Rica.
Liberia is an ideal location to begin your Costa Rica vacation. The popular tourist destinations Costa Rica has become famous for such as cloud forests, volcanoes and surfing beaches are easily accessible. Liberia is very close to popular Tamarindo and its surrounding beaches and it is also becoming the preferred city to fly into if you are going to the resorts in the Papagayo Gulf area, only 30-40 minutes away. It is also very close to some popular and beautiful national parks.
Santa Rosa National Park is one of the oldest parks in Costa Rica and it is very popular among tourists as well as ticos. Surfers flock to the park because it has one of the best surf spots in Costa Rica and possibly the world, Witches Rock. Costa Ricans go to the park because of its history, in 1856 Costa Rica was being invaded by a North American named William Walker. Because Costa Rica did not and still does not have an army, locals banded together and fought William Walker and his gang and pushed him back into Nicaguara, where he was later captured and killed. Because of this battle there are a couple of famous landmarks called Hacienda Santa Rosa located in the park.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is also a popular spot. Located just to the northwest of Liberia, visitors will find miles and miles of hiking trails and volcanic wonders such as hot springs and bubbling clay pots as well as numerous waterfalls and rivers.
The infrastructure of Liberia is expanding and more and more visitors each year use the Daniel Oduber International Airport, just 5 miles from Liberia, as their gateway to Costa Rica. Take the time to spend an afternoon or an evening in this authentic Costa Rican city before or after your flight or before enjoying the other nearby activities and attractions.
